Homestays can be one the most fun ways to save travel dollars. You can do this with relative, friends, efriends or just about anyone! For me i would not likely go off to visit the mountains nearby by myself, but with someone visiting, i would certainly take advantage of being able to show them around and thus getting out there once again for myself as well. There is such a pleasure to invest your time in making someone else's holiday a real success. I can only look forward to my next visitor(s) now. With enough efriends, you could travel a long ways and see a lot of country. Also combine the hosting idea with the other ideas mentioned for some variety or to fill in some days in between. Most of us have some kind of accommadations and if you have a spare room with a private or even a shared bathroom, you are in business. Generally a two week maximum stay is the limit. It depends on who the company is and the number of local sights to see and their vacation time frame. You know all of the places that they can visit and where those good restaraunts are etc. and when you visit them, you can have the same hosting available to you as well. There are a few websites that cater to this idea.
