I had a great visit with Barb and she was such a great host, that I sure wished that I could have stayed longer. So much ground to cover yet and oh, so little time. Bye Barb! Thanks for everything!
I headed off down the I-10 which would take me into Texas eventually. Highway I-10 from Phoenix to Tucson was packed – only
two lanes. The elevation of the highway is only 1500 feet, with
desert vegetation all around jagged, desert mountains everywhere you look – these kinds of mountains have their own unique beauty – Picacho Mountain was so interesting in its formation. I went by Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch – did I just end up in a Looney Tunes cartoon? Tile murals along the highway as you enter Tucson I-10 is also referred to as Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway. Around Benson, AZ, we had a sweeping view of the
desert mountains and valleys in every direction near Texas Canyon, AZ – million of huge boulders and rock formations - Council Rock was where the peace treaty between Apache Chief Cochise and the Governor was signed in 1872. I arrived in Las Cruces, New Mexico at 11pm and saw the twinkling lights of the city. As I drove along, the car developed an engine noise and had a great deal of lose of power. uh oh... I knew that I had to stopover and get this problem looked after. I looked for a Motel 6 and found the Super 8 with a better deal. It turned out that the mechanic's shop was only two blocks away too. It was Dec 23 and I was stuck since nothing was open on the 24th.
And I knew that Dec 25 would not be any better. I was forced into staying here over Christmas. Well, Las Cruces means "Place of the Cross". How fitting. Might as well try and make the best of things. I did get the best deal on accommodations over any other motel that I stayed elsewhere on the trip.
Before I left that morning for Texas, Barb and I picked some grapefruit off of the tree in her backyard to take. Thanks Barb!
It was getting dark now. I stopped at this roadside rest in New Mexico.
This was such interesting scenery. Look at the size of those boulders!
