THE TEXAS TRIP - DAY 25

THE TEXAS TRIP - DAY 25 - Tuesday, January 8, 2002

ARLINGTON, TEXAS TO AMARILLO, TEXAS

Just as I was driving past Fort Worth we saw a B-52 bomber flying overhead. Near Wichita Falls, TX, I spotted a small herd of single-humped camels by the side of the road – no kidding! I pulled far ahead of a flaming car, and then went to see if everyone was OK. It was a very sad situation, because the car belonged to a single mom who was with her teenaged son. They were on their way to California to start a new life, and everything they owned was in the car. In Clarendon I saw a place called “The Redneck Lodge” and another called the “It’ll Do Motel”. Am I in Texas or what?? I spent the night in Amarillo, and visited with Jan, an email contact friend.

I decided to take Hwy. 281 up to Hwy. 287. Doug had told me that Hwy. 281 runs all the way from the Canadian border at the International Peace Gardens in Manitoba/North Dakota to the Mexican border.

As I drove along, I saw this funny looking cloud of smoke. I never did find out if it was a sand storm, a fire or from a plant of some sort.

I saw a fireball ahead just east of Clarendon, TX. Oh my, it was a car in flames. I was not about to continue ahead if that gas tank had not exploded. I used my CB radio to ask one of the truckers parked there if it had which they confirmed it did.

I pulled past and stopped to have a better look.

It was a divorced mother and her son travelling to California from Denton, Texas to start a new job and a new life. Unfortuately, all their possessions went up in flames. All they had was her purse and a cell phone and lucky to be alive. Within only a few minutes the car was just a melted out shell. It was a heart-wrenching thing to see. I was packed up fully with my car so I was unable to offer assistance. The fire truck finally arrived and the interstate was shut down while they put out the fire. Hopefully, they made it okay to California.
