Day 21 – Friday, January 4, 2002
I made a stop at the Padre Island Gift Shop and bought T-shirts
for the kids. I saw some mutant looking cows with big humps at
the base of their skulls near South Texas Nuclear
Project. Of course I later found out that it’s an
actual breed, but it was fun to imagine that they had
mutated because of the nuclear facility nearby!
I drove through Bay City, TX and noticed that it has a
tributary of the Colorado River running through it.
(One thing I really noticed about rural Texas is that
there is an awful lot of poverty and people literally
living in shacks and hovels. Many towns are so
ramshackle and run down that it’s hard to fathom how
they can still exist. The conditions some people live
in are just deplorable, and so many places had yards
chock full of junk and garbage. It was a very sad
sight to see, in such a progressive and wealthy
country.) I ended up on Galveston Island, Texas for the night.
I went to the seawall, where the waves were quite
high and white capped because of the gale force winds
that day. There are some lovely old mansions in Galveston, such
as the Moody Mansion and Bishop’s Palace.
The bishop's house on Galveston Island.
The church across the street from the house.
Windy and cold!
