Day 20 – Thursday, January 3, 2002
Since the car was leaking oil, I took it in to Pep
Boys Auto Repair. It took several hours for them to
get around to fixing it, so I spent the time at Padre
Staples Mall just down the road.
I enjoyed looking around the Thomas Kinkade Signature
Gallery, where the very friendly owner/operator told
me a lot about the background of the paintings and the
artist.
Once the car was ready, I drove over to the U.S.S.
Lexington Naval Museum. This was the real deal – a
bona fide retired aircraft carrier that is now
permanently docked in the Corpus Christi Harbor.
Portions of the movie “Pearl Harbor” were filmed
aboard the ship, and later that evening I discovered
that Huy had been an extra in the film, playing one of
the Japanese sailors.
On the flight deck there were several varieties of
fighter jets, plus a Huey helicopter. It was a really
interesting tour!
One unusual thing I noticed along the coastal areas
is that many homes, buildings, and motels are built on
stilts to prevent flood damage in times of hurricanes
and tropical storms.
The USS Lexington. I decided to do a tour of this ship for something different on my roadtrip.
Mounted airplane at the Lexington.
Guns of the Lexington.
Corpus Christi bridge over the harbour at night.
The bridge.
I got a picture of this chopper flying overhead.
More planes.
On the deck.
Do you know the names of these planes?.
I don't remember what kind of plane this was.
These birds were swarming around me looking for handouts. There were a lot more right overhead. Maybe 50 in total? Reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's movie "The Birds" that I had seen back in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
