THE TEXAS TRIP - DAY 19

THE TEXAS TRIP - DAY 19 - Wednesday, January 2, 2002

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS TO CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS

I started my day early with a visit to the Natural Bridge Caverns near New Braunfels, Texas. Finally, I will take a cave tour. The area around Austin and San Antonio is beautiful and it will warrant a longer stay on a future visit. The caverns were fascinating to see, though the 99% humidity inside them was a bit tough to take, especially since the hike was a bit strenuous in spots! I was really glad to have taken the tour however, since I hadn’t had the time to see the Carlsbad Caverns the week before. I then set out for Corpus Christi, and noticed along the way how much greener the scenery became the closer I got to the Gulf of Mexico. Along the highway I saw entranceways to many large ranches. One of them was called Windwood Ranch, which has a huge manor built in the Spanish style on top of a hill. Quite impressive! Approaching Corpus Christi, I saw several big oil refineries. I spent the evening at Huy’s apartment on Whitecap Blvd. on Padre Island, just a stone’s throw away from the beach on the Gulf of Mexico.

Natural Bridge Caverns.

This is the natural bridge where it gets its name from.

The bridge is just outside the cave entrance. This is where the tour starts. There used to be a room here but it had collasped at one time.

I went down into the earth a few hundred feet on this tour. The book "Journey to the Center of the Earth" by Jules Verne comes to mind on this tour!

This is Pluto's Anteroom.

Such formations.

It was around 80 degrees (F) with lots of humidity down here.

Such weird formations... This one looks spooky.

Lots of bats were in here at one time and left a pile of bat do over the years...

More bat do... P U... Well, actually it didn't stink.

They call this formation "Fried Eggs".

This postcard shows it better.

I headed over the JFK bridge to Padre Island.

I headed to Padre Island to meet up with Huy, my host for the next two days. Note the house to the right that looks like a soccer ball.

I took a quick peek at the beach and the gulf of Mexico as the sun was going down fast.
