Here is where I head back into New Mexico to Roswell and then return into Texas to continue the adventure.
Eager to be on my way, I was up at 5 a.m. and
showered in the Flying J and then waited for the sun
to come up so that I could hit the road in daylight.
Passing through El Paso, I looked over into Juarez,
Mexico and saw the shacks on the side of the hills and
an enormous Mexican flag.
Looking across the border, I could see how smoggy and
poor the city was.
My first destination was the Guadalupe Mountains,
which is the highest point in Texas. On the way there
I spotted a house built to resemble a flying saucer.
Between the Carlsbad Caverns and the town of Carlsbad,
the throttle on the car stuck open at 60 mph – thank
heavens the problem rectified itself with a little
help from above!
In Artesia, N.M. I saw a snowman made out of
tumbleweeds on someone’s front lawn. (Of course I use
the term “lawn” very loosely – in desert areas like
that the “lawns” are merely patches of dust!)
I toured the UFO Museum and Research Center in
Roswell, N.M. unfortunately, the only “aliens’ I saw
were the illegal kind (just kidding!) but it was a bit
of a hoot anyway.
The barren wasteland of eastern New Mexico is broken
up only by the sight of small oil drills dotting the
landscape. I also saw several small herds of antelope
along the way, before ending the day in Odessa, Texas.
Guadeloupe Mountains, the highest point in Texas. I passed by the Carlsbad Caverns later down the road. The bats would not be making their flight this time of year and I had to keep moving to cover a lot of ground. I decided that I would do one of the caves down the road on another day.
The road is longggggggggggggg....
Just nothing much around here.
The plants look alien too along this deserted highway. I past a building built like a typical flying saucer as I started down this highway.
Here it is. The Roswell UFO Museum! Free Admission too!
An interesting store across the parking lot from the museum.
Interesting sign on this building.
There was a full moon out and I found a place to stop to get a picture with it in it. It was off down the road again past many smelly oil towns and then I planned to spend the night in Odessa, Texas.
