Calgary To Palm Springs

Calgary To Palm Springs November 25, 2000 to Dec 2, 2000

Here is my ticket to California for this trip!

Well, this was one interesting adventure to watch unfold as there were a number of variables that lined up one by one. I was offering to take a Uhaul full of furniture down to Wichita, Kansas to a gal that I knew who married her internet boyfriend. She was unable to leave the U.S. for a year and during that time, they decided to pull up stakes and move to Palm Springs, CA. She finally came to the place where she really wanted her furniture from Calgary and I had to try and switch my last week of vacation to help make it happen. Well, that last week of November was Grey Cup week in town and my work was short of drivers so that I could not at first switch my week of vacation time. A vacation slot came open at the last minute and the arrangements started to unfold. The gal was to fly to Calgary to arrange the Uhaul rental and to have it all packed and ready to roll for Saturday, November 25, 2000. Well, darn if I didn't set my alarm for PM instead of AM, but woke up with enough time to still be able to rush right along to catch up with the Uhaul that was almost fully loaded. The trailer attached to the Uhaul was in need of repairs to the tail lights so another delay in getting out of town sooner. The gal was to follow the truck down to the border and ensure that everything was in order for crossing and then she would return to Calgary and leave for her Palm Springs flight on Tuesday. Because of the Uhaul delays, we had a brunch at my house for the weary travellers as we started out to the border a little later than planned. Crossing the border with the furniture went well. Gas stops were a bit of a concern running late at night. I sure didn't want to run out. I did bring my altas to find the larger towns. Somewhere crossing the Continental Divide and beyond all the way to Idaho Falls, ID there was snow falling. The road turned into a white out with markers along the highway reducing the speed to 30 to 35 mph for nearly two more hours. I did see a truck with a blade for clearing the roads but he was on the northbound side of the highway. There was very little traffic on the I - 15 in the wee hours of the morning. The check engine light kept flickering as well during the snowfall. I figured that the moisture in the air was giving the carburator a hard time. The storm let up in Idaho Falls and the roads started to get better the further south progress was made. 30 hours later, arriving at Circus Circus in Las Vegas and I booked a two night stopover to kick back and relax and take in the atmosphere. Arriving into Las Vegas, NV you could see the Vegas Strip for miles and exactly where it was situated. The monsterous hotels really stood out from afar... totally awesome! Such a magical view which unfolded as you came closer. Reminded me of the Emerald City of Oz. I have added the trip pictures to the following links......
