Calgary To Boston, MA and Nova Scotia June, 1999

I was in Boston, MA for the 4th of July to watch the spectacular fireworks displays. Each area had their own display. I was situated in Nahant where i could see many 21 gun salutes as each area wound down. There were many a firecracker going off all around that special day even. I drove around 26 hours straight after leaving Boston, MA across on I - 90. I wanted to drive through the night when it would be cooler. Those 90 F degree temperatures were wicked. I tried to sleep for a bit at a rest area in the early morning hours, but it was already hot and muggy, so I just kept on going. I wanted to stop in Hill City, SD to meet Coleen and Bob. Coleen runs the Workers On Wheels website which I had contributed some articles for and Bob was doing seasonal work on the 1880 train there. I also had to be back for my cousin and his girlfriend in Ohio who were flying to Calgary for our famous Stampede week in July.

Driving through Chicago. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I think that i squeaked through just before rush hour.

Somewhere in Illinois I am told, this was really neat seeing. A McDonald's restaraunt over the interstate and a rest area. It is on the I-90 for sure!

I love the Black Hills. I think it is my fourth visit to the area now. Just one of those places where you feel at home. Here is Mt. Rushmore with the president's heads carved out on it. I added this travel video that i found on youtube.

Well, here they are Coleen and Bob. Finally we get to meet. Here is their website.Workers On Wheels
Bob was working on a replacement steam engine at the time.

And I was treated to an unforgetable evening with the Flying T Wranglers after a delicious chuckwagon meal. They are located just north of Rapid City as you head into the Black Hills of South Dakota. This is one of the many videos that i took of that night. I will post them all on the cross country tour of 2004 when i get to it. For now, enjoy the preview or double click the videos and go to the youtube website and see them all now.

And then is was a bee line for Calgary.... So very sad that the adventure was coming to a close, but I still had a week to go entertaining my out of town company which turned out really well to cap it all off. Might as well start planning the next adventure. Sometimes you never know where you are going til you get there! And other times, you just plan your trip as to what you want to see. There is so much out there. How will i ever get to see it all? What I did was to plan to break down areas into doable trips so that over a period of time, I would have covered much of N. America!
