This month long trip of 1999 will be the hardest trip of a lifetime to beat! It was just so very incredible to drive across the country and to experience the scenery of North America, discovering and setting foot in new places every day.
Medicine Hat, Alberta. You know that I have passed this attraction many a time and never ever stopped to take a picture of it. Well, on this trip, I would catch up on that as I took my time as I travelled. It was to be my first big trip with many more to follow. I would now get a chance to enjoy the freedom of the road. I found a youtube video to show more of what this area has to offer.
And on down the road I go headed for Winnipeg as I approach the Saskatchewan border. Lots of flat prairie land here. My 86 Olds with around 300,000 kms on it did okay for the entire trip giving me no troubles at all. The 18 day stay on the U.S. side totalled about $350 which I had saved up in U.S. coin. The exchange rate kills you spending money on the U.S. side and I just did the best that I could to conserve funds. I had put my CB radio in the car that I hadn't used in a very long time and also had my hand held 2 meter ham radio along with me.
Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Here is that TALL moose! You can get a bit of an idea of his height from that picnic table in the picture. I added a youtube video so show you around town. Moose Jaw is pretty much the halfway point between Calgary and Winnipeg.
Indian Head, Sask. I remember of one road trip of yesteryear, stopping overnight beside this roadside attraction. I found an interesting youtube video about this little community.
Manitoba border. There is a good rest area close by as you pass this sign heading east on the TransCanada Highway #1. I have made many, many trips to Winnipeg from Calgary since i moved there in 1988. How time flies! Added a youtube video of this cross Canada cycler who stopped by the same location on his journey.
Well, I just had to stopover in Winnipeg and visit mom on the trip. Too bad that I could not drop her off in Ohio to visit her sister on the way. She had been hit by a car earlier in 1998 and was not in the greatest shape to travel. (Mom passed away on April 7th, 2001 after a short battle with cancer.) I managed to visit my old friends while I stopped over for a few days. I was sure anxious to get moving on down the road. The highway was calling me.
