TREK TO FLORIDA - DAY 15

TREK TO FLORIDA - DAY 15 - Saturday, April 26, 2003

NAPLES, FLORIDA TO SEBASTIAN, FLORIDA

45,148 kms and rising. Up at 7:20 am and now on the way to Key West, Florida all excited but sad because this is my extreme point where I will turn around and have to head back home. I spent the night in a parking lot next to a 24hr Subway. Started off with some stormy weather and rain. I headed down Hwy 41S to Hwy 997S. I was delayed by a group of cyclists doing a fundraiser perhaps? I went through the historic downtown of Homestead, Florida. Then onto Hwy 1, the overseas highway. I met up with those cyclists again and had to wait... Also, there was lightning happening and I sure would not want to be out on a bicycle at this moment. I crossed over a 7 mile bridge! I could pick up Cuban radio stations. I drove through the Everglades National Park. I saw lots of air boats available but with the inclement weather, business was very slow for them this day. I saw a Panther crossing sign and may have seen a black panther as road kill. I did see Alligator roadkill.. something that I am not use to seeing in Canada. Key West, Florida had gravesite above ground as well. I drove around town for a bit and then began the journey back. I went through Miami, Florida. A very nice city. I saw their rapid elevated transit system. There were trees covering the highway in places... Lots of shade. In Jupiter, Florida, I had to wait for a drawbridge to come down. A boat passing through the bridge was carrying a bunch graduation students celebrating. It was now dark and I kept on driving and driving this endless Hwy 1N with a few detours along the way. I wanted to get as close to Orlando, Florida as I could. I found a 24 hour Walmart Food center in Sebastian, Florida and crashed there for the night.

The old bridge and the new. What a difference!

Between two bridges. Sounds like a good name for a movie!

My car Ulysses and the colorful water off hwy 1.

Just can't get over the multi colors of the water. I had trouble with the humidity fogging up my camera lens. I was using the air conditioning this day.

Driving down hwy 1 with bushes on both sides of the highway and water beyond on both sides.

I saw military aircraft flying every few mins.

Key West, Florida. This is the turnaround point of my trip.

Key West, Florida. Look at the overhanging and blooming tree.

Downtown Key West, Florida. Got to love it!

How many birds do you see?

This ole bridge had seen one too many hurricane.

Hwy 1. One of the many island connecting bridges to cross.

The 7 mile historical bridge on Hwy 1 to Key West, Florida. I took a number of photos going to Key West and since I was having trouble keeping my camera lens from fogging or I was too late to stop for a picture before going across a bridge, I took several photos on the return trip heading towards Miami, Florida.

Another view of the 7 mile bridge. The old one and the new one.

An interesting angle of the 7 mile bridge along hwy 1.

A boat crossing the colorful waters.

A tropical paradise!

This pictures rocks!

I found a beat up U.S flag to fly for a bit of my trip. After this picture, it started to get dark as I continued to travel as far as I could. I talked to a few local ham operators north of Miami, Florida for a bit and carried on into Sebastian, Florida for the night.
