Day 9, Monday, August 18, 2003 - Whitehorse, Yukon to Hazelton, B.C.

66,881 kms and up at 5:43am local time. I took hwy 1E to hwy 37S which is the Cassiar Highway. Lots of rain in driving around Alaska. Jude City has free overnight parking. I past Dease Lake on wet gravel road for a long ways. I past a burnt out VW van. Police and firetruck were attending. It was totally toasted. I past 3 bears along this highway. I took hwy 37A to Stewart, B.C. and past by a black bear near the junction. He was too shy to get a picture of him. I went to Stewart, B.C. and saw the black bear again on the way back and again he darted off as I slowed down. Then I took hwy 37S and came upon another black bear. They seemed to like hanging around this lake area. I did see a Wolverine along hwy 16E as I headed towards Hazelton, B.C. to call it a night along side a motel.

One foggy road early in the morning.

I had passed by here at night the last time and on the return during daylight hours. I forgot to get a picture of that fake mountie car from a distance to show you how real it looked. They must have a low budget for police service in this town!

On hwy 37S, the Cassiar highway.

Hwy 37S.

I saw this black bear up ahead.

I pulled up right beside him and he just went about his business ignoring me but standing his ground.

I drove up just a little bit further and found this black bear cub. Where was the mother I thought? He darted off jumping in the air over that little knoll right beside him and was gone as he watched me.

Cassiar Highway.

A rest stop along hwy 37S. Too bad the flowers were not in full bloom.

At the rest stop.

I caught another rainbow shot.

On hwy 37A, I watched this fox coming towards me on the other side of the road. He was walking fast and right passed me stopped with my window rolled down and camera in hand.

The highway to Stewart, B.C.

My first view of a glacier on this stretch of road.

Another view.

Foggy road ahead.

Glacier ahead.

Getting closer.

Close enough now.

Two of many waterfalls along this road to Steward, B.C.
