Day 5B, Thursday, August 14, 2003 - Wasilla, Alaska Layover

And next door to the Alaska Museum is where you can get a ride on a garden train. Be sure to visit and take a ride and not miss this attraction. Want to become a member of this group who operate the train and/or pitch in some hours of volunteer labor, be sure to ask the man in charge! I really enjoyed my visit and know that you would as well. This was one exciting day and then later at night, Bob, Coleen and I drove into Anchorage, Ak to the Fly By Night Club to see the showand have dinner. Kind of like "Air Farce" and SPAM was their theme. Too funny! I had the most enjoyable day of my Alaska trip visiting the museum, visiting a local Alaskan restaraunt for lunch, the garden railway and topped off with the nightclub. Scenery is nice but people can make you life even more brighter. Thank you Bob and Coleen for making one very special day for a wandering hobo!

All aboard. Hey it looks like Amy at the controls but it isn't. And look who is sitting in front of me. Looks like one unusual passenger!

This dog even loves the train.

Over a bridge we go. These bridges were designed by an engineer for strength and design.

Well, the dog decided to hop off and run along side for the remainder of the trip.

Going under a trestle.

Crossing a trestle.

Into a tunnel we go. Duck your head!

At the station, Bob poses for a picture.

Hey, it is my turn and I give Bob the camera.

A picture of the train with no riders.

This is the owner's baby. The roundhouse is in the background. Coleen and the owner's wife chat. She is really into the hobby which is a real bonus for the owner to have that kind of support.

I got a good angle on this and it looks like a full life model in this picture. This train seemed to be blowing fuel pumps too often giving the owner a headache trying figure out why.

Bob poses with this awesome engine. The owner stands nearby pondering whether to let me operate his train unknowingly to me.

My turn, my turn. Hey, this was exciting! I am into the HO scale of model railroading and this was a new experience for me.

Bob layed down on the rails to get this low angle picture and the owner let me operate the train. I was really honored to have that priviledge that rarely goes out to anyone else. I made sure that I did not run over Bob.

I had to watch my head going through the tunnel. It was such a rush to operate the engine. The owner invited me to come back to Alaska and spend more time here. One day, I just might do that. I kind of fell in love with the layout and the work that had been done so far.
